What is Farther / Closer?
Farther / Closer is a free daily geography game. Every day at midnight UTC, everyone in the world gets the same ten head-to-heads: two city pairs, one question — which pair is farther apart? Or, on about half the questions, which is closer together — so read before you tap. Both real distances land on the map instantly, so every question teaches you something about how the world actually fits together.
It's harder than it sounds: the two distances in every question are within about 25% of each other, and maps have spent your whole life lying to you. Projections stretch the far north, flights curve over the pole, and "just across the sea" can be farther than "across the whole continent".
How points work
Each of the 10 questions is worth 100 points — a perfect day is 1000.
- 🟩 Right pair — 100 points, no partial credit needed
- 🟥 Wrong pair — 0 points, but you see both distances anyway
All distances are great-circle ("as the crow flies") — the shortest path over the surface of the Earth, the same number a pilot would care about.
The distances come from the same math behind MapGO's Point to Point tool, which measures the great-circle distance between any two points on Earth. Sign in free to save your score, build a streak, and appear on the daily and all-time leaderboards.
