Because the Earth is round, the shortest path between two points is not a flat line but a curve that follows the planet's surface — this is called the great-circle distance, and it is the same path long-haul flights follow. How it works
The calculator uses the Haversine formula, a well-established piece of math that treats the Earth as a sphere. It takes your two coordinate pairs, works out the angle between them as seen from the center of the Earth, and converts that angle into a distance along the surface.
The result is accurate to within roughly half a percent anywhere on the planet — the small difference comes from the Earth being slightly flattened at the poles rather than a perfect sphere.
