Spreadsheets on a map

Which area is each row in?

Tagging adds a column that says which area each row falls in: its county, its sales territory, its delivery zone. Under the hood it is point in polygon, done for every row.

With that column you can do ordinary spreadsheet things: filter one region, or make a pivot table of rows per region.

Whose areas?

Official areas, such as countries, states and districts, come from boundary data. Your own areas, such as sales territories or delivery zones, come from a file you have or shapes you draw.

In MapGO, Tag Zones and the Process tool Join columns by location work with any areas on the map, yours or official, in your browser. A paid CSV upload can also add the country, region and district to every row without any areas of your own.

The awkward rows

A point exactly on a shared edge is inside both areas, so it is counted in both. That is why per-zone counts can add up to more than the number of rows.

A point outside every zone gets an empty tag. Filter for blanks after a run: they are often typos in the coordinates, or customers just past the edge of your map.

Questions

How do I find which county each address is in?

Geocode the addresses, then tag the points with county boundaries (point in polygon). MapGO's paid CSV upload can add country, region and district in one go.

Why do my zone counts add up to more than my rows?

Points on a shared edge, or in overlapping zones, are inside both and counted in both.
