What is the UK Distance Calculator?
Find the straight-line distance between any two places in the United Kingdom, as the crow flies. Search two cities, towns or addresses, paste coordinates, or click the map, which opens on the United Kingdom. Distances in the UK are given in miles, so read the miles figure; kilometres are shown beside it.
For example, Edinburgh to London is 332 miles (534 km) in a straight line, and London to Manchester is 163 miles (262 km). This is the straight-line distance, not a driving distance: the road between two places is always longer, and the calculator does not plan a route or give a travel time.
How it works
The calculator uses the Haversine formula, a well-established piece of math that treats the Earth as a sphere. It takes your two coordinate pairs, works out the angle between them as seen from the center of the Earth, and converts that angle into a distance along the surface.
The result is accurate to within roughly half a percent anywhere on the planet — the small difference comes from the Earth being slightly flattened at the poles rather than a perfect sphere. For comparing locations, planning legs of a journey, or estimating coverage areas, that precision is more than enough.
How to use it
- 1
Set your two points
Enter the latitude and longitude of both locations, search for a place by name, or click two spots directly on the map.
- 2
Calculate the distance
Run the calculator and MapGO computes the great-circle distance between the two points using the Haversine formula.
- 3
Read the result
The straight-line distance appears in kilometers and miles, with both points and the connecting line drawn on the map.
Common use cases
Logistics planning
Estimate shipping legs and delivery radii before committing to detailed route planning — straight-line distance is a fast first filter for feasibility.
Aviation and sailing
Great-circle distance is the path aircraft and ocean crossings actually follow, making it the right measure for flight legs and sailing passages.
Real-estate proximity
Compare how far listings sit from schools, offices, transit hubs, or the coast to rank properties by location.
Research and analysis
Measure separations between study sites, weather stations, or sample points in academic and scientific work.
Frequently asked questions
How far is it between two places in the UK?
Search both places, or click them on the map, and the calculator gives the straight-line distance between them in miles and kilometres. For example, Edinburgh to London is 332 miles (534 km) in a straight line, and London to Manchester is 163 miles (262 km).
Is this the driving distance?
No. It is the straight-line (great-circle) distance over the Earth's surface, as the crow flies. A drive between the same two places is longer because roads bend around terrain, water and towns, and MapGO does not measure driving distance or travel time.
Does it use miles or kilometres?
Both, on every result. Distances in the UK are given in miles, so read the miles figure; kilometres are shown beside it.
What is the Haversine formula?
It is a standard formula for computing the shortest distance between two points on a sphere. Given two latitude/longitude pairs, it calculates the great-circle distance — the curved path an airplane would fly between them.
How accurate is the result?
Typically within about 0.5%. The Haversine formula assumes the Earth is a perfect sphere, while in reality it is slightly flattened at the poles, which introduces a small error.
