KML

Convert Keyhole Markup Language (KML) online — free

KML is the format of Google Earth: placemarks, paths and polygons with names, descriptions and styling, written as XML. It is the easiest way to hand a map to someone who is not a GIS user — they double-click and Google Earth opens it — and it is what Google My Maps and many GPS apps export.

Convert KML to GIS formats below (GeoJSON for the web, shapefile or GeoPackage for desktop GIS), or produce KML from your GIS data so anyone can view it in Google Earth. KMZ (zipped KML) support is on the roadmap — unzip it to get the KML inside for now.

Files are deleted automatically after 48 hours. Your files are never shared.

KML: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between KML and KMZ?

KMZ is simply a KML file zipped together with its images and icons. If you have a .kmz, rename it to .zip and extract it — the doc.kml inside is what you upload here while native KMZ support is being added.

How do I get a KML out of Google My Maps or Google Earth?

In Google My Maps use the layer menu → “Export to KML/KMZ” and pick KML. In Google Earth right-click a place or folder → “Save Place As…” and choose .kml. Upload the result below to convert it to GeoJSON, shapefile, GeoPackage and more.

Is the KML converter free?

Yes — new accounts get free conversion credits, and paid plans convert unlimited files within their size limit. Nothing to install; everything runs in the cloud.

What is the maximum file size?

Up to 5 GB per file on the largest plan (smaller plans have lower limits). Files are deleted automatically after 48 hours.
